South India and Sri Lanka. The Indian cardamom is a bit smaller, but more aromatic. The most important cardamom producing country today is India.
The most important exporter in terms of volume is Guatemala, where cardamom has been grown exclusively for export for almost 100 years. There are numerous related plants in the genera Amomum, Aframomum and Alpinia, many of which have aromatic seeds and occasionally appear as a substitute for or adulteration of cardamom seeds. The aroma notes of most of these species differ considerably from real cardamom: some have an interesting stronger aroma (see also purple cardamom), while others taste hot and peppery (see grains of paradise).
